Broken Cable? Don't Try to Open the Door

Same-day cable replacement across Ohio. Cables replaced in pairs for balanced, safe operation.

Quick Answer

Garage door cables run alongside the tracks and bear the full weight of the door when springs lift it. A snapped cable means the door hangs unevenly or won't move at all. Cable repair is urgent — operating a door with a broken cable risks further damage to the tracks and opener.

About Cable Repair

Garage door cables work with your springs to safely lift and lower the door. When a cable breaks or frays, the door can drop unevenly, jam at an angle, or refuse to move. Broken cables are a safety concern — the door's full weight (150-400 lbs) is no longer properly supported. Don't try to operate the door if you suspect a cable problem.

If any of these sound familiar, give us a call. We've seen it all.

Grinding noise from cable rubbing on something
Spring broke and took the cable with it

Our Process

How We Fix It

We replace cables in matched pairs, because if one broke, the other is the same age and under the same stress. We use aircraft-grade galvanized steel cables rated for your door's weight. Every cable replacement includes a full system inspection to find out why the cable failed.

  1. 1 Secure the door in a safe position
  2. 2 Release spring tension safely
  3. 3 Remove old cables from drums and bottom brackets
  4. 4 Install new matched pair of cables
  5. 5 Wind cables on drums and adjust length
  6. 6 Re-tension springs and balance the door
  7. 7 Test door operation and safety features

Real-World Situations

Common Scenarios

Cable failures have recognizable patterns. Here are the situations that account for most cable repair calls across Ohio.

Spring Broke and Took the Cable With It

This is the most common cable failure scenario we see across all four Ohio service areas. When a torsion spring snaps, the sudden release of tension can unwind or snap the lift cable on the same side — especially if the cable was already showing wear. What appears at first to be just a broken spring often involves a damaged or displaced cable as well. We inspect both systems in every spring repair call so nothing gets missed.

Cable Frayed by Ohio Winter Conditions

Road salt tracked into garages, repeated freeze-thaw moisture cycles, and the humidity common to Lake Erie-adjacent areas all accelerate cable rust and fraying. A cable that appears serviceable in July can be down to its last few intact strands by late February. We see this pattern most often in Cleveland, Toledo, and other northern Ohio communities where winter conditions are more severe and persistent.

Cable Off the Drum but Still Intact

The cable slipped off its drum winding but hasn't broken — it's coiled at the base of the door or hanging loose near the bottom bracket. This usually happens when a spring breaks and releases all tension suddenly, or when the drum itself has a crack or the cable end fitting has come loose from the bracket. The door cannot operate safely in this state. We re-wind the cable, inspect the drum, check the spring, and re-tension everything before testing.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my garage door cable break?

Most common causes: age and wear (cables last 8-12 years), a broken spring that put sudden stress on the cable, rust from moisture, or the cable rubbing against something it shouldn't. Sometimes cables fray over time from a rough drum or pulley. We'll inspect the whole system to find the cause.

Do I need to replace both cables?

Yes — always. Both cables are the same age, have the same number of operational cycles, and have been exposed to the same environmental conditions. If one broke, the other is under the same level of wear and now carries the full load alone. Replacing just one leads to uneven door tension, crooked tracking, and additional stress on the springs and opener motor — usually followed by a second service call shortly after.

Is a broken cable dangerous?

Yes. Without a functioning cable on one side, your door's 150-400 pound weight is no longer balanced between both lift points. The door can drop suddenly on the failed side, hang at a dangerous angle, or fall completely if someone tries to lift it manually. Children and pets are particularly at risk near a door in this state. Stop operating the door immediately, keep the area clear, and call us — this is a situation that should be treated as urgent.

My cable came off the drum but isn't broken. What happened?

This usually happens when a spring breaks — the sudden release of tension lets the cable unwind from the drum. It can also happen if the drum itself is cracked or if the cable end fitting pulled loose. We'll rewind the cable and check the drum and spring to find the cause.

Cable snapped and door was stuck halfway open. They came out pretty quick (about 2 hours). Replaced both cables even though only one broke, which made sense. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is they were about 30 min late from the window they gave me, but they called ahead to let me know.
